In June 2015, the Spanish Senate passed a law that allows the awarding of Spanish nationality to the descendants of Jews expelled from Spain in the 15th century. These individuals are entitled to a passport and need not give up their current citizenship, irrespective of their place of residence. Electronic applications for Spanish nationality will be accepted for a period of three years starting on October 1, 2015 with extension for one additional year.

 

What are the requirements in applying for Spanish citizenship?

 

All applicants are required to prove that they are indeed descendants of the Jewish families expelled from Spain in 1492.

Applicants, whom are not minors or over 70 years old, must also successfully complete two exams administered by the Institution Cervantes:

1. Knowledge of the Spanish language (level A2 of Spanish to foreigners or beyond) and

2. Knowledge of the Spanish Constitution, culture, and current events.
